Parents of Teens Facing Addiction
PARENTS: WHAT TO DO IF YOUR TEEN IS AN ALCHOLIC OR ADDICT
If you notice signs that you child or teen is becoming an addict or alcoholic, contrary to everything we've suggested, it is the responsibility of the parent to try to intervene by seeking professional treatment and counseling. There is no evidence that "confrontational interventions" by family members are effective. Instead, parents should focus on encouraging and creating incentives for getting the teen to a doctor or professional treatment center.
It is important for parents to reassure their teen that they are loved, supported and safe.
It takes a great deal of courage for a parent to seek help for their child. However, with a lot of support and hard work by both the parent and the child/teen, it is possible to get them back on track with their academics, personal milestones, and teen life.
